THE DREAM POUNCES ON me like a lion. The executive office has marble floors and a stunning view of the San Francisco skyline. A man sits behind the desk, and though he is grown into middle age, I recognize him. It’s Max.

“I will fund everything, Dr. Fitzroy,” he’s saying. “Whatever staff, whatever budget. But you must promise, bring me back to life as soon as it’s ready.”

My head spins at his offer. But we are not ready to deliver what he wants. Not yet.

“This isn’t the same as the nanotechnology,” I say. “This isn’t just hacking or controlling the mind.”

“Yes, of course. But if you can do those things—and you certainly have, just look at our little revolution in China—then enhancing the mind to sustain its life is possible. You have admitted it. I believe in this. The brain is remarkable, amazing.”

“This is true...” The brain is worth everything I have, and words like remarkable and amazing do not do it justice. The brain is godlike. Just days after conception a fetus’s neural plate forms, the linchpin of life, growing and folding onto itself, folding again, and again, until the neural tube closes and the weeks-old baby fires neurons that move the body, that spark the first synapses. Since life starts so early and vibrant, no good God would have made it so vulnerable. He should have made brains impenetrable. Only then would we be made in the image of a god. As long as cancers and tumors and toxins prowl around like a lion, death will come and gods will be no more. This is what I will do. But only with funding.

Max’s offer is the only way forward. The government says it’s too risky. Most investors have abandoned us. My own fortune—even Susan’s—has dwindled, but not the memory of Benjamin. This is for him, and for everyone like him.

I shake Max’s hand. “Deal.”
